Skip them. The largest evidence review to date, a 2023 Cochrane analysis of 17 randomised controlled trials, found that blue-light-filtering lenses probably make no difference to digital eye strain, sleep quality, or your retinal health. The marketing got way ahead of the science. If you've already got a pair and you like how they look, no harm done. If you're about to drop money on them to fix tired eyes or bad sleep, that cash is better spent elsewhere, and we'll show you where.
The short version: blue light from your phone is not frying your eyes, the lenses barely filter it anyway, and the thing actually wrecking your sleep is when and how bright your screens are, not the colour of the light hitting a lens.
What the evidence actually says
In August 2023, Cochrane (the gold standard for systematic reviews of health evidence) pooled 17 randomised controlled trials from six countries testing blue-light-filtering spectacle lenses against ordinary lenses. The verdict was blunt on all three of the claims these glasses are sold on.
On eye strain, the review found there "may be no short-term advantages" to using the lenses to reduce visual fatigue at the computer. On sleep, it concluded it is "currently unclear" whether the lenses affect sleep quality, with trials reporting mixed results across very different groups of people. On protecting your retinas from screen light, the most-hyped claim of all, none of the included studies even measured macular health, so no conclusions could be drawn about it.
The authors' own line is about as clear as research bodies get: "Our findings do not support the prescription of blue-light filtering lenses to the general population." That is not a "we need more data" hedge. That is the people who read all the data telling you not to bother.
The retina claim is the weakest part
The scariest pitch for these glasses is that screen blue light slowly cooks your retinas. There's a tidy lab story behind it: very intense blue light can damage retinal cells in a dish. The problem is the dose. The blue light coming off your laptop is a tiny fraction of what you get from being outside on a cloudy day, and far below the levels used in those cell studies.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology, the largest body of eye doctors in the world, is direct about it. There is no scientific evidence that the light from computer screens damages the eyes, and the Academy "does not recommend blue light-blocking glasses." A screen is not a tanning bed for your eyeballs.
It gets more deflating. Most blue-light lenses only filter out about 10 to 25% of blue light, depending on the product. So even if screen blue light were a genuine threat, a lens that blocks a quarter of it at most is a strange weapon to bring to that fight.
So why do your eyes feel like sandpaper
Because you stop blinking. That dry, gritty, tired feeling after a long screen session has a real cause, and it isn't the colour of the light. When you lock onto a screen, your blink rate drops, your eyes dry out, and you get the cluster of symptoms now called digital eye strain. The American Academy of Ophthalmology is clear that these effects come from how people use their screens, not from anything coming out of them.
This is the part the glasses can't fix, because they're aimed at the wrong target. A tinted lens does nothing for a dry cornea. What helps is blinking more, looking away regularly, and giving your eyes a break. None of that requires a purchase.
Where blue light does matter: the timing
Here's the honest nuance, because it's easy to overcorrect into "blue light is a total myth." Light at night genuinely affects sleep. The catch is that the lever is timing and brightness, not a pair of glasses.
A tightly controlled study of 116 adults found that exposure to ordinary room light before bed, under 200 lux, suppressed melatonin by around 71% compared with dim light under 3 lux, and shortened the body's nightly melatonin window by about 90 minutes. Melatonin is the hormone that tells your body it's night. Blunt it for an hour and a half and you've pushed your body clock later. Notice what was being tested though: the brightness and timing of the light in the room, not whether someone wore a filtering lens.
The practical reading from Harvard Health is the same. Bright light of any colour at night suppresses melatonin, blue wavelengths do it a bit more strongly, and the sensible response is to dim and time your evening light. What to spend on instead
If the goal is comfortable eyes, follow the 20-20-20 rule the eye doctors actually recommend: every 20 minutes, look at something far away (roughly 6 metres or more) for at least 20 seconds, which forces a blink reset and relaxes the focusing muscles. Keep artificial tears on your desk for when things feel dry, sit about an arm's length from your monitor, and sort out your room lighting and screen contrast. All of that is free or close to it, and a couple of those moves double as a reason to get up and do a quick mobility reset if you're chained to a desk.
If the goal is better sleep, the money goes into your evenings, not your eyewear. Dim the lights in the hour or two before bed, switch your phone and laptop to night mode (which warms and dims the screen, and unlike the glasses it's built in and costs nothing), and stop scrolling in a pitch-black room with the brightness cranked. The lens isn't the lever. The bedside lamp is. The Singapore angle
Worth knowing locally: optical chains here, from the big names at malls like Owndays and Spectacle Hut down to neighbourhood opticians, will happily add a blue-light coating to a prescription, often as a paid upgrade. There's nothing dodgy about that, but treat it as a cosmetic or comfort preference, not a health purchase. If a sales pitch frames the coating as protecting your eyes or fixing your sleep, that claim has run past the evidence. Pay for it if you like the slight tint, not because you've been told your retinas need defending.
If you do most of your screen time outdoors or near big windows in our glare, a proper anti-glare or anti-reflective coating, and actual sunglasses with UV protection when you're outside, do far more for comfort and genuine eye health than any blue filter. That's a real, boring upgrade worth the money.
