The new wearable question is not just “how much is the device?” It is “what does this thing cost after three years, and what disappears if I stop paying?”
Oura, WHOOP, Fitbit, Garmin and health-app platforms are all pushing deeper insights into paid tiers. That is not automatically bad. It is bad when buyers compare device prices and forget the subscription quietly standing behind them with a card machine.

Why subscriptions changed the buying decision
A S$400 tracker with no subscription may be cheaper over three years than a S$250 tracker with a monthly fee. A free app can become less useful if the best coaching, trends or comparison features move behind a paywall. A premium membership can be worth it if it changes your behaviour. It is a waste if it only makes graphs look more official.
The key is separating data collection from interpretation. Most wearables can collect steps, heart rate, sleep and workouts without drama. The paid layer increasingly sells context: coaching, readiness explanations, AI summaries, long-term trends, recovery insights and training plans.
Garmin Connect+: the optional tier
Garmin announced Garmin Connect+ at US$6.99 per month or US$69.99 per year, with AI-powered Active Intelligence, expert training guidance, badge challenges and expanded LiveTrack features. Crucially, Garmin says existing Garmin Connect features and data remain free.
That makes Garmin less punishing than membership-first models. You can buy the watch and ignore Connect+ if you do not need the extras.
Oura: the ring is not the full bill
Oura Membership applies to Gen3 and newer rings, with US pricing listed at US$5.99 per month or US$69.99 per year. The ring is the hardware. The membership is what unlocks the fuller app experience.
That does not make Oura a bad buy. It means the honest comparison is ring price plus recurring membership, not ring price alone.
WHOOP: subscription is the product
WHOOP is the clearest membership-first wearable. The official membership page lists tiers starting at US$199 per year, with higher tiers adding newer hardware and more advanced features.
That simplifies the upfront device question because hardware is tied to membership, but it also means you are committing to a recurring model from day one. If you stop paying, the value proposition changes completely.
Google Health Premium: AI coaching joins the bill
Google Health Premium is now tied to the Google Health Coach, built with Gemini. Official Google material lists Google Health Premium at US$9.99 per month or US$99 per year, with inclusion in some Google AI plans.
That is a meaningful shift. The wearable is no longer just a sensor. It is an input into a paid AI coaching layer.
How to compare properly
We scored WHOOP 5.0 and Oura Ring 5 with that three-year maths in mind.
Use a three-year cost view. Add the device price, required memberships, optional memberships you realistically want, replacement bands, chargers and app-store taxes. Then ask what you would lose if you cancelled.
To make that concrete, run the membership over three years on the prices above. WHOOP at US$199 a year is about US$597, with the hardware bundled in. Oura Membership at US$69.99 a year adds roughly US$210 on top of whatever you paid for the ring. Garmin Connect+ at the same US$69.99 a year would also add about US$210, except it stays optional, so a Garmin kept on the free tier adds nothing. Google Health Premium at US$99 a year lands close to US$300. Same wrist or finger, and it is the subscription, not the sensor, that moves the bill.
If cancellation removes only nice-to-have coaching, fine. If it guts the product experience, treat the subscription as part of the purchase price.
Bottom line
Buy the wearable whose free layer you can live with. Pay for coaching only when it changes what you do, not just how fancy the summary sounds.
A health tracker is supposed to reduce friction. A subscription you forget about is just another bad habit with better branding.
FAQ
Which wearables need a subscription?
Oura Gen3 and newer rings, WHOOP and some Fitbit or Garmin premium tiers charge recurring fees for full insights. The device price is rarely the whole bill.
How much does Oura really cost over three years?
The ring plus membership adds roughly US$6 a month on top of hardware. Budget ring price plus recurring membership, not the box price alone.
Is Garmin Connect+ mandatory?
No. Garmin says existing Garmin Connect features stay free. Connect+ is an optional premium tier for AI coaching and extra features.
Is WHOOP subscription-first?
Yes. WHOOP has no upfront hardware price; you pay an annual membership that includes the band and tiered features.
How should I compare tracker value?
Calculate the three-year total: hardware plus subscription. A cheaper band with no fee may beat a discounted watch with a monthly paywall.
